How is the decision made about who gets the vaccine first?
Due to limited initial supply, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), an independent panel of medical and public health experts, has made recommendations on who should be vaccinated first.
The ultimate goals of the recommendations are:
Decrease death and serious disease as much as possible
Preserve the functioning of society
Reduce the burden on those already facing disparities due to COVID-19
Based on initial recommendations by ACIP, the CDC is providing vaccine allocation recommendations to federal, state, and local governments. Ultimately, vaccine distribution is decided state by state.
