Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by a virus or bacteria, specifically the bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. The same bacteria can also cause infections in the ears, the blood and the lining of the brain. Pneumonia symptoms include cough, fever, and difficulty breathing.
There are two different pneumococcal vaccines that cover different strains or serotypes of Strep pneumoniae. The vaccines are referred to as PCV13 and PPSV23.
