People living with diabetes or pre-diabetes measure blood sugar to make informed decisions about diet and medications. Using a CGM device to automatically estimate blood glucose level (blood sugar) over time allows patients to monitor changes over hours or days and spot trends so they can make more informed decisions about food and beverages, physical activity, and medicines. Keeping blood glucose level in a target range can help prevent other health problems caused by diabetes. Providers may prescribe using a CGM to adults and children as young as two who need insulin to manage type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or another form of diabetes. Patients may need to wear a CGM all the time or only for a few days to help adjust diabetes care.
CGMs have three components:
FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors to use with the FreeStyle Libre 3 app or FreeStyle Libre 3 reader. The Freestyle Libre 3 Plus sensor is the world's smallest, thinnest 15-day sensor and is indicated for use in people living with diabetes who are aged 2 and older. Prescriptions for these 15-day sensors are filled with 2 boxes for a 30-day supply or 6 boxes for a 90-day supply.
Dexcom G7 sensors to use with the Dexcom G7 app or Dexcom receiver. The Dexcom G7 sensor is a 10-day sensor and is indicated for use in people living with diabetes who are aged 2 and older. Prescriptions for these 10-day sensors are filled with 3 boxes for a 30-day supply or 9 boxes for a 90-day supply.
